LIB200

After taking this course, my thoughts on humanism, science and technology has changed. I started to focuses on the development of new thinking in complexity and on the tools needed for this new thinking. I see the world in a different way. One can learn to think in complexity about the real complexity of a nonlinear complex reality. I learn that both connect in its own way. I used to view these topics in a passive way, not believing that they have a large influence in our lives but they do.  Science has a big impact on our lives. So many achievements we have received because of science. The World’s Fair was one of the best idea that scientist ever had. WE could look in to the future. Technology also had a big impact on me. In with the new out with the old. I never knew the damages that Ewaste has caused. The atomic bomb was also a bad part of science. Science has there up and downs. Humanism is the best way to balance it. Humanist goes around helping scientist to understanding the world. It show whether is right to kill or hurt someone for their achievements.  It helps them understand what is right and what is wrong. Scientist believes to have no mortal rights. Now that I learned more about each area, I feel comfortable enough to say that I am either a humanist or a scientist. I am a combination of the two. Combining them can help you balance your thoughts.

One Scientist I have looked up to was Robert Oppenheimer. Oppenheimer played a huge significant role in our lives. Doe to his research of atomic weapons the United States has develop thousands of atomic weapons underground for special uses. He faced many challenges in the pursuit of science. He spend most of his life try to understand what E=mc^2 meant. America looks up to him because of his achievements. Internally he was stuck between a fine line, of morality and success.it was a hard choice for him. It wasn't easy, the decisions he had to make denoting the atomic bomb. His whole life was a secret and he was always fallowed. His work shows us a sense of threat, as that single bomb took hundreds of thousands of lives in an instant. He showed the world what he was made off. It left the area He left a scared the face of the plant. He had the place dead with radiation by splitting a single atom. So much destruction was caused because of an atom.  He was known all over the world. This man showed that science can always be taken to new levels, to an unimaginable extreme, but at a deadly cost. The lives those were lost that day when America dropped an atomic bomb on japan.  Its effects can be everlasting, shown to us by Oppenheimer, and the pursuit of science can sometimes go against a person morality.

I'll be researching about the 1939 World's Fair and the causes of global warming. The world is facing a crisis because of this futuristic event.    The author name is Peter deMenocal and the title is Taking the Temperature of the Planet. You can find this article in the LIB200 course packet from page 78 to 84. The article mentions that are planet temperatures are rising and what going to happen If we don't do anything about it. The article also talks about how some of our countries are seeing a big change in weather. The seasons in this countries are changing such as are winters are becoming much warmer and the summer are much cooler. It also shows a graph that you can see when the temperatures are rising. It also talks about national disasters such as the ocean level may rise because of global warming. Are ice glaciers are melting because of the drastic change of our temperature. I choose this article because it gave me a good argument tours my paper.

The author of my second source is Tim Hall and the title of this article is climate Drivers. You can also find this article in the LIB200 course packet from page 85 to 95. This article talks about how are co2 levels are rising fast for the past few years. It also mentions that are atmosphere is being destroy because of the greenhouse gases and one of the gases are co2. The Suns solar radiation is being trapped in earth because of the greenhouse gases. A graph shows that in the 1900 the greenhouse gases levels were rising drastically.  The article also mentions how people are causing co2 to be released in the air. This article has most of my information I need for my paper. It also has a lot of facts and detail on what too much co2 can do on earth.

Assignment #5

The Promise and Peril of Robots in Film, TV and Real Life: Friends or
Foes?

I believe that robots cant be are friends because we made them. The reason people don't put robots as a companion is due to their lack of intelligence. Robots don't have emotions or a conscience. With out that how can robots think like us.  They might know more then people but they do not know what to do with the knowledge they have. I believe that there is going to be a technical glitch which caused all robots and machines To malfunction and might as well hurt us. this makes robots more superior than us humans. the robots in a machine has been doing many tasks that we can't do and because of that people are scared.I believe that the robots and machines are only to be used as a tool, so that people used then to make their lives easier. we should not call them friends or anything that is close to us because they are not alive, they are more of a program then living flesh. Yes we might program them to be friendly and useful but they are still man made which means there are errors. Do you believe in robots watching over your kids. In the the movie "I,Robot" they gave the robots feels and it didn't go well. the robot could not control its emotions. The robots try to evolve so that human race can be taking over. In Ray Kurzweil's book, The Singularity Is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology it predicts that robots will surpass Intelligence. And Phil K. Dick: Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?, Philip presents a future where robots are just like humans. To point where they can not be told a part. In the movie "terminator" when we build a robot to protect us, a virus breaks out and ends up attack us. they made the robots look like humans. Getting killed by are own creation is not that surprising. obama air drowns have had issue killing innocent people. if it hard to trust humans how are we going to trust robots.

Assignment #4

The New York World's Fair was a place on wonders. It was a place for people to see the world in a different view.  The view of the future that can change the world. But the people forgot one thing and that was the side effects. The world fair caused a national disaster. The cars that was show in the world fair made people shocked. The world fair showed the world that in the future everyone is going to have a car and more. all the new technology that was showed had a massive amount of chemicals that have been damaging are atmosphere. the car and refrigerate released CO2 into the air which cause the breaking of the ozone layer. I feel like the world fair did more damage then helping the world. yes they help the lives of people but making it easier on them. Transportation got easier and keeping your food fresh and more. The people moved to suburbia because of the world fair influence. The technology made it easy for them to live there. All the things that made are lives easier came with a price. The world is getting hotter and hotter. because of the green house gas. The book "The Lost World of the Fair" By David Gelernter in 1939 talks about how amazing it was that they get to see the future with there own eyes. The book never mentions the part were the world getting harmed by it. In the book "Climate Change: Picturing the Science it talks about the harm the world fair did on on this world. the books show how the weather had change over the years since the technology has change. i believe that the world fair had its up and down but it needs to show the effects of the future too. Just because the technology got more better doesn't mean it safe.

Science Or Technology

In this paper  im going to talk about the global situations that are be caused my Science and Technology. One thing that be said in the paper the is that global worming is one of the courses on the paper. There is many idea that the world far courses in the future.

● Ian McEwan’s Enduring Love (the book that contains the short story, “Us or Me”)
● Ian McEwan’s Solar (a novel that uses a brilliant, but corrupt, climate change researcher for its
main character)

● A close reading of the magazine issue (The New Yorker) that first published “Us or Me” in
1997. In this paper, you would look at advertising, and discuss current events from 1997 to see
how the portrayal of science might have challenged the readers of this magazine.

"Popular Science"

What is Popular science to me? Well ever since as and kid i always wanted to know what is out there in space that can change are lives. I wanted to know how far and big space is.? I had so many question that ill like to be answer. To me popular science was the universe, know everything about this plant and more. Knowing that space is no billions of light years, it make me feel that we are nothing in this universe. I believe that there is so much to learn about space and that there might be more things out there that we can discover. Science show it self as an humanism because of the beauty and understanding of why the world excise. The show "Cosmos" shows  the people emotion and the experience of the universe. Edward Rothstein a man of science says that science is humanistic. The beauty science can let are mind explore other thing that we never thought about. He also want let the world see it by make a chow called "Cosmos". People all around the world want to see the show come to life. Why, because it gave them ideas and answer that they where meaning to know. It's to understand the meaning of space and time. Back in the day people where outcast-ed be religious people because of the belief they had. "Giorano Bruno was one man that didn't care and put science as his life. Edward also say that we are nothing but a dot in the universe. Are universe is small compare to others. Are technology grow so much that we can see millions of miles away from are plant. i learn that there is so much in the universe that we haven't discovered. They also might be other life out there that we haven't seen yet. If you want to know what kind of galaxy we live in, go watch the show "Cosmos".
